Helm Monitor (iOS)

What this does: Helm Monitor joins a Cues session on an iPad or iPhone and shows the Monitor page, frame by frame. It plays no audio and sends nothing back.

The Board layout is the Cues Monitor page:

  • Show clock: SHOW CLOCK · <TRACK>, then the timecode, large. Drop-frame rates read with ;.
  • Strip: the track’s waveform, cue ticks and the playhead.
  • NOW / NEXT: cue number, name and a count-in box. The next cue steps up as the playhead passes each one.
  • Cue list: the live cue held three rows from the top, scrolling as cues fire.
  • Bar counter: BPM and the bar (BAR 12/64), when the track has a beat grid.

On iPhone the Board drops the strip and the bar counter.

The device asks. The host allows or denies it.

  • Passcode on: the device enters the code first. Then Ask waits for Allow; Open lets it in at once.
  • Passcode off: the device asks without a code.
  • Approved before: straight in, no code, no Allow.
  1. On the Cues host, View → Sessions… → Host this show.

  2. Open Helm Monitor. Sessions on this network lists every host it finds: name, address, policy, and APPROVED when this host let the device in before.

  3. Tap Join, or Rejoin when approved.

A host with its passcode on shows Join… instead. It opens a field under the row: type the 6 digits, tap Join with passcode. Under Ask: “This session needs its passcode. The host then allows or denies this device.” Cancel closes the field.

  4. iOS asks for Local Network access on the first join. Allow it. Without it the app cannot reach the host.

  5. Under Ask the screen reads ASKING THE HOST…: “This device has asked to join. The host allows or denies it.” On the host, press Allow on the toast or in Requests.

  6. The board appears. Cancel on the waiting screen withdraws the request.

  1. On the host, click Show join code….

  2. On the device, under Scan the session QR, tap Scan QR and point the camera at the tile. With the passcode on, the QR carries it.

  3. Under Ask, wait for Allow. Under Open the device is in at once.

A join link tapped in a message opens the app and joins the same way.

Use it when the device cannot see the host’s screen or the list.

  1. Under Or type it in, type the Address (192.168.1.20:5355).

  2. Type the Fingerprint (26 characters). Both are under Show join code… on the host.

  3. Type the code in Passcode (“if the session has one on”). Leave it blank when the session has none.

  4. Tap Ask to join, or Join with passcode with one typed.

  • Video and image lanes show their slot: the lane’s colour, its name and media not on this device. No media is copied to the device.
  • The host can turn the pane off per device: “The host has turned the sequence monitor off for this device.”
  • Switch to another app and Helm Monitor leaves the session. The board shows LINK LOST.
  • Come back and it rejoins on its own as an approved device: Rejoining the host….
  • Removed by the host: the Join screen reads “Removed from the session: removed by the host” with Join again · . It asks again, with the code when the passcode is on.
  • Denied: “The host denied this device.” with Try again · .
  • Not a remote. No GO, no transport, no edits.
  • Not an audio device. It never plays sound.
  • Not a backup. If the host stops, the board freezes on LINK LOST.
  • Not a TAKE follower. When a Cues standby takes the session over, the iPad does not move. Join the new host from Sessions on this network. Passcode off: Join takes it straight in, approved on the old host. Passcode on: type the code; under Ask the new host presses Allow.
