Build page

What this does: Build is where you place cues against the audio. You drop markers, sort them into stacks, edit one cue or a hundred at once, and repeat cues on the beat.

Beat grid, tempo changes, Snap and the Beat Builder have their own page: Beat grid and tempo. Media lanes and clips: Media and lanes.

  • Click a block and you click the lane: the playhead moves there. Click the dot to pick the cue.
  • Drag the dot to move the cue. The block moves with it.
  • Drag a Flash block’s end to change the hold. It snaps like a marker and is at least one frame. One undo step. The desk’s Flash Off moves with it. Not on a locked stack.
  • Blocks show on the Timeline lanes only. The waveform shows markers, not durations.
  • A fader line runs across a stack’s lane when any of its cues sets a fader level. See Fader levels.

Every visible stack’s cues, in time order. Classic heads it Cues (n). Flat heads it Cue sheet with n cues · n stacks.

Each row shows:

  • Time on the show clock.
  • Cue #: the cue’s place in its stack. Set by time, never typed. When the desk cue differs it follows as →12.
  • Cmd: the desk command. Dimmed when it comes from the stack’s default.
  • Sector chip: the department, in its colour.
  • Name, then any notes after a dash.
  • Stack: its number and place (3.2 = stack 3, cue 2), then the stack’s name in its colour.
  • Flat only: a Live or Next chip on the rows the playhead is on and coming to.

The chips in the sheet’s header show or hide one department: its cues on the sheet and the Sheet waveform, and its stacks in the stacks list. Timeline lanes follow the stacks’ eyes, not the chips.

What a lock stops:

  • Moving: drag, ← →, Move to…, Shift cues….
  • Editing: rename, delete, the side panel, Renumber desk cues…, moving cues in or out.
  • New markers: M, + Cue, the Beat Builder and Duplicate… refuse it. A toast says <stack> is locked. The Beat Builder and Duplicate… show it greyed out.
  • Deleting the stack. Unlock it first.

What still works:

  • Click to select and seek. Find, Hide, Solo, Make active.
  • The stack’s settings: name, colour, department, default command.
  • ⌘Z. It still undoes an edit made before the lock.

How it shows:

  • Stacks list: the padlock is closed.
  • Markers and lane dots: no drag. The hover tip leads with a padlock and ends Unlock <stack> to edit.
  • Timeline: a padlock on the lane label.
  • Side panel: <stack> is locked. Its cues cannot be edited. and an Unlock button. The fields are greyed.
  • Open stack: the header reads · locked. Its buttons are greyed.

A mixed selection edits the unlocked cues only. A toast says n locked cues left alone.

The lock holds on other machines too:

  • A session editor can’t change a locked stack’s cues. The editor sees <stack> is locked on the host.
  • A desk move of a locked stack’s event is ignored. The Control Desks log says so.

  3. Press Enter, or leave the field.

  • The field shows the name they share, or Mixed when they differ. Renaming n cues sits under it.

  • An empty name changes nothing.
  • Notes work the same, with no numbering. Emptying shared notes clears them on every cue.
  • Edit Selected → Label in an open stack takes # too.

Desk cues take decimals up to 3 places.

Once programming has started on the desk, renumbering a sequence moves every look. So a cue added to an Iterative or From cue # stack never renumbers the others:

AddedDesk cueExample
Between two cuesThe number between them with the fewest decimalsBetween 3 and 4: 3.5. Between 3 and 3.5: 3.2. Between 3.5 and 4: 3.7.
No room left (3 decimals)The next free 0.001 above the cue before itBetween 3 and 3.001: 3.002
After the last cueThe next step of the stack’s runAfter 33: 34
Before the first cueBetween 0 and itBefore 1: 0.5
  • The desk gets the new cue in its place in the sequence: stored, named, its event added. Nothing else on the desk changes.
  • Moving or deleting cues renumbers nothing. A cue keeps its desk cue wherever you drag it.
  • Only Renumber desk cues… gives cues new numbers. On the desk each renumbered cue is copied to its new number with its looks, and the old number goes.
  • Fixed stacks give every new cue the stack’s number. Manual stacks give none.

Duplicate… copies the selected cues n times, a set interval apart. One cue, 7 copies every 1 bar: 8 bars of it.

  1. Select the cues: one, or a selection from any stacks.

  2. Press ⌘D. Or Build → Duplicate…. Or right-click → Duplicate… or Duplicate to ▸ a stack.

  3. Set Copies, Every, Start and To stack.

At the playhead · AtIts first cue exactly therek − 1 intervals after copy 1
  • The selection is one block. Each copy keeps the spacing inside it. With bars and beats the spacing is kept in beats, so a copy past a tempo change stretches with the music.
  • Bars follow the meter. Every 1 bar puts each copy at the same place in the next bar, whether that bar is 4/4 or 3/4. A bar.beat start takes beats up to the bar’s meter: 17.3 in 3/4, not 17.4.
  • Bars and beats need a BPM. Without one they are greyed out and the unit starts on Seconds.
  • The Result line reads 14 new cues · copy 1 at 01:00:12:00 · bar 5.1 · copy 7 at 01:00:40:00 · bar 12.1.
  • Copies past the end of the track are skipped. A copy is placed whole or not at all. A toast counts them.
  • Each copy keeps the name, notes, command, cue command, fade, delay, hold, duration, colour and fader level.
  • Desk cues follow the target stack. Iterative: the next free numbers. Fixed: the stack’s number. Manual and From cue #: the next free number only where the original had its own desk cue.
  • Limits: 4096 new cues in one go. One undo step removes them all.

Flash is a desk command. It sends Flash at the cue and Flash Off a hold later.

  1. Select the cue.

  2. Side panel → Command → Flash. Or set the stack’s Default command to Flash.

  3. Type Hold (s). Empty = 0.5 s.

  • On the desk a Flash cue is two timecode events: Flash, then Flash Off.
  • Hold shows only on a Flash cue.
  • With a selection the hold goes to every selected cue.
  • On the Timeline drag the end of the Flash block to set the hold. See Cue blocks.

A cue can move its stack’s playback fader on the desk: to a level, over a fade time. Example: at this cue the fader goes to 100 % over 2 s.

  1. Select the cue.

  2. Side panel → Fader (%): 0 to 100.

  3. Optional: Fader fade (s). Empty or 0 = the fader jumps.

  4. Leave the field. With a selection, every selected cue gets it.

  • Empty Fader = the cue leaves the fader alone.
  • The Timeline draws a fader line across the stack’s lane: 100 % at the top, 0 % at the bottom. It starts at the first cue with a level. That first ramp starts from 100 %, where a new desk fader sits. Cues does not know where you left it.
  • On the desk the level runs when the desk cue fires. It needs a joined grandMA3 and an Import. See grandMA3 setup.
  • Cues only writes the Command of cues that have a fader level, and clears only the ones it wrote. Commands you typed on the desk stay.
  • Off and Kill fire no desk cue. A level on them never runs. The side panel says so.
  • One desk cue, one level. When several cues fire the same desk cue (a Fixed stack, a repeat), the first of them sets the level for every firing. The side panel says so.

One slot, four states. The last thing you picked decides.
